April 29

Friday night we went to services at the Kotel. Then we took an hour and a half urban hike back to the Biet V’Gan hostel we were staying.  On Saturday, we went to the local shul which was a two minute walk from the hostel. Due to the late night, the night before, and because of the long walk home, we were all exhausted and took a two hour rest before havdala. After havdala, we went out to shop and eat at Ben Yehuda Street.

Shabbat Shalom,

Shavua tov OHDS!

Today was our second day in Jerusalem. We woke up this morning at 6:45 and we were on the bus at 8:30. The bus took us to an archeological dig where we sifted through remains of the Temple Mount. We found pottery shards, glass, metal, tile, and other interesting rocks, some dating back to the First Temple period! The archaeologists picked their favorite three pieces we found and the people who found them got prizes!

From there we went to the Old City of Jerusalem, where we put all the notes from OHDS in the Kotel. Then we walked around the City of David and went through Hezekiah’s water tunnel. The tunnels were cramped, we had to crouch at some points, and the freezing water was almost up to our waists. We used glow sticks to help us see in front of us and sometimes had to feel the mucky, wet walls around us to show us where we were going, but being with our class made it all fun!

Following the Hezekiah’s water tunnel, we had a cash lunch in the Jewish Quarter. After lunch, we saw excavations from the Second Temple time period on the southern side of the Temple Mount. We learned all about the architecture and what made Jerusalem such as special city.

Then we spent a while shopping in the Cardo. Our class all pitched in and got OHDS a present - but you’ll all have to wait to see what it is! (Hint: it’s special for Jerusalem) - followed by a scavenger hunt. Our grade was divided into five teams and each team was given a list of questions, things to find, and things to take pictures of. Talia’s team came in last place, Coby’s in second, and Ali’s in first (GO TEAM 3!).

Finally, we were off to Emek Refaim for a cash dinner and then onto an art program in the evening. A truly packed day…
