Departure from SFO on American Airlines 1929 at 6:15am.  Transfer in LAX to El Al 006.

Monday April 23
Bruchim Haba’aim!
Arrival at Ben Gurion airport at 2:00pm.
Opening Program by the Ceasarea aqueduct (time permitting).  We drive north to Nir Etzion for check-in and welcome dinner.

Tuesday April 24

Erev Yom Hazikaron
Lihyot Am Hofshi
We begin the day reliving the period just before Israeli Independence at the Atlit Clandestine Immigration Camp.  We’ll see the new a/v presentation on a real ship which helps to tell the story of the Aliyah Bet which brought thousands of Jewish refugees to Eretz Yisrael.
We’ll continue to the mystical city of Zefat to explore the synagogues and artist colony.   “Shtender” Program with local artist Noah Greenberg.
Travel to the southern Golan Heights to the dati yishuv of Hispin.
Check-in and dinner.
Evening:  Join the yishuv for tekes.

Wednesday April 25

Yom Hazikaron
Golan Heights 360o
Tekes with school kids in the area?
Visit the bunkers overlooking Syria at Mt. Bental.
Hands-on Workshop at the De Karina Chocolate Factory.
Hike along Nahal Devorah to the Jilaboun waterfall.
Eve:  Kinneret Boatride and Tiberium water sound & light show (or join local youth for a party).

Thursday April 26

Yom Ha’atzmaut
Happy 64th Israel!
Visit the “slick” at Kfar Giladi, where the Haganah stored weapons for the War of Independence.
Enjoy kayaking down the Jordan River.
IDF base visit.

Friday April 27
Longing for Zion
Travel south along the Jordan River Valley.  En route to Jerusalem, meet Ethiopian families who crossed the desert to Sudan to wait for months in refugee camps before being airlifted to Israel by the Mossad.
“Jerusalem Prepares for Shabbat” activity at the Machaneh Yehuda fruit & vegetable market.
Check-in and prepare for Shabbat.
Candle lighting at 18:41.
Kabbalat Shabbat at the Kotel followed by festive Shabbat dinner at the hotel.

Shabbat in Jerusalem
Shabbat morning services at local synagogue, Kiddush and lunch at hotel.
Rest time.  Afternoon walking tour of Yemin Moshe.  Seudah Shlishit picnic in nearby park.  Havdalah (19:55) followed by free time and cash dinner on Ben Yehuda Street or Mamilla Mall.

Sunday April 29
This Year in Jerusalem
Descend to the City of David.  Walk through Hezekiah’s water tunnel, built 2700 years ago to protect Jerusalem’s water supply from invading armies.
Participate hands-on in a unique rescue dig, sifting through remains from the Temple Mount.
Jewish Quarter Scavenger Hunt and cash lunch.
Kotel Letters Activity and private time at the Kotel.
Learn more about the role of pilgrimage and the centrality of the Temple in ancient times at the Southern Wall Excavation or Kotel Tunnels
Eve:  Hands-on art program with Kol Ha’Ot:   Illuminating Jewish Education Through Art
Cash Lunch in Rova

Overnight:  Bayit V’Gan, Jerusalem
Monday April 30
Shoah to Tekumah
Visit Yad L’Kashish-Lifeline of the Elderly, where shopping is a true mitzvah!
Learn and remember at the Yad Vashem Memorial Complex, including the Children’s Memorial and Sculpture Garden. (Elana Heideman if possible)
Program on Israeli heroes at Mt. Herzl, including the graves of Yitzhak Rabin, Golda Meir, Hanah Senesh, and Yoni Netanyahu.
Dinner at the Werthan’s in Baka. (R. Rozen join group?)
Eve:  Journal Time
Lunch at Yad Vashem

Tuesday May 1


Lowest Point on Earth!
Set off for the Dead Sea Region.
Hike to the Nahal David waterfall at Ein Gedi.  Float in the Dead Sea.
Continue to the Negev.  Camel riding and Bedouin “hafla” dinner at Chan Hashayarot.
Set up camp at Divshon.
Evening:  Star gazing. Ponder why the Torah was given in the desert.

Wednesday May 2

Making the Desert Bloom
Dawn hike at Nahal Havarin. After breakfast discuss David Ben Gurion’s vision for making the desert bloom at his grave which overlooks Nahal Zin.
Volunteer hands-on with Leket, picking left over fruits and vegetables to be donated to local soup kitchens.
Mifgash with moshav youth at Moshav Beit Gamliel (with BBQ?)
Continue to Tel Aviv for check-in and dinner.

Overnight:  Mishkenot Ruth Daniel Youth Hostel, Jaffa


Thursday May 3
Bashanah Haba’ah!
Reenact the moving moment when David Ben Gurion declared the establishment of the State of Israel at Independence Hall.
Visit the multi-media Palmach Museum dedicated to this elite unit of the Haganah.
Visit the Neot Kedumim Biblical Nature Reserve.  Hands-on activities, goat herding, and tree planting ceremony.
Sculpture in the dark workshop and time to explore Old Jaffa.
Summary discussion and farewell dinner at Kapiche Cafe.
Transfer to airport for departing flight.

Friday May 4
Departure on El Al 001 at 1:00am.  Transfer in JFK.  Arrival SFO at 10:50am.



Program will be staffed by tour educator, youth counselor, and security guard/medic.

All meals are included in the package price.
